‘You almost finished my son’s career’ – Yuvraj Singh recalls conversation with Stuart Broad’s father after hitting him for six sixes
Yuvraj Singh hitting six sixes to Stuart Broad against England in the inaugural T20 World Cup was one of the best things to happen in Indian cricket. It rejuvenated India’s campaign in the tournament as well and ended up winning the trophy defeating Pakistan in the final. One of the reasons behind Yuvi going berserk against Broad was his duel with Andrew Flintoff just before the start of the over.
There was a lot of heat in the middle and Broad, whose career had just started then, had to bore the brunt of it. Interestingly, Stuart Broad’s father Chris Broad was officiating as the match referee in the tournament well and happened to meet Yuvraj the very next day asking the batsman his signed jersey for his son.
Yuvraj Singh, who retired from all forms of the game last year, recalled his conversation with Chris Broad during a BBC podcast. He mentioned that Chris took a signed jersey from him for Stuart and also said that he has almost finished his son’s career.
“His dad, Chris Broad, is a match referee had he came up to me the next day and said, ‘you almost finished my son’s career and now you need to sign a shirt for him.’ So I gave my India jersey and wrote a message for Stuart saying, ‘I have been hit for five sixes so I know how it feels. For the future of England cricket, all the best’,” Yuvraj said.
Stuart Broad is one of the best bowlers in the world now, says Yuvraj Singh
Yuvraj Singh later also praised Stuart Broad for being one of the best in the world and lauded him for recovering from the incident. He also went on to point out that a bowler in India will not have such a fantastic career after being hit for six sixes. “Stuart is one of the best bowlers in the world now. I don’t think any bowler from India could get hit for six sixes in an over and then have such a fantastic career,” the southpaw added.
Recalling the incident which led him to creating a world record, Yuvraj Singh said that Andrew Flintoff said something to him and it all started from there. He is also happy that his six sixes record came against England as Dimitri Mascarenhas had hit him for five maximums in an over in an ODI.
