CSA has asked me to lead South Africa again: AB de Villiers
AB de Villiers stunned everyone by retiring from international cricket in May 2018. However, ever since Mark Boucher has become South Africa’s coach, the talks of imminent return to the game have begun. Boucher cleared recently that they will consider De Villiers if he commits to the required period and prove his form. Even the latter has mentioned time and again that he doesn’t want any preferential treatment and wishes to earn his place in the team again.
However, the 36-year-old has made a stunning revelation that the Cricket South Africa (CSA) has asked him lead the national side again. The Proteas are hoping that AB de Villiers plays the T20 World Cup later this year which is set to be played in Australia from October 18. But with the ongoing pandemic across the world which has led to countries going under lockdown, the tournament is in doubt.
I should be better than the player next to me, says AB de Villiers
“The desire is there from my side to play for South Africa and have been asked by Cricket South Africa to lead the Proteas again,” De Villiers said while speaking in the Star Sports’ show Cricket Connected. But the superstar cricketer has clarified that he should deserve his place in the playing XI and won’t just replace any other player for the sake of it.
“The most important thing to me is that I have got to be in top form and I have got to be better than the player next to me. If I feel I deserve my spot in the side, it becomes much easier for me to feel that I should be part of the playing XI. I have not been part of the Proteas for a while and I feel that it’s important for myself and for other people to see that I am still good enough to be there,” he added.
Moreover, AB de Villiers recently also made it cleared that a lot of things will change if the T20 World Cup is postponed due to the COVID-19. He also expressed his concerned over the disturbed cricketing calendar. “However, with the virus going around, I don’t know what’s going to happen with the schedule,” the former South Africa cricketer signed off.
