33 Interesting stats from Rohit Sharma’s career
It took a while for Rohit Sharma to make his mark in International Cricket but his career graph kept going up ever since he was pushed up to open the innings in the limited-overs. The 7-8 years have been extremely fruitful for Rohit as he continued to make big records in the ODI format. His success was not only limited to ODIs as he is among the most prolific batsmen in the T20I cricket. His record as captain in the IPL doesn’t need an introduction where he stands as the most successful captain by leading the Mumbai Indians to four titles in only seven seasons.
On the occasion of Rohit Sharma’s 33rd birthday, we look at 33 interesting stats from his professional career:
The man of big events:
1. Three of Rohit Sharma’s six hundreds in the World Cups came while chasing; the most number of 100s by any player in CWC chases. His four centuries while chasing in ICC ODI tournaments (CWC and CT) are also the most for any player.
2. Rohit Sharma became the first player to smash a hat-trick of ODI centuries in England with the centuries in each of India’s last three league stage matches of the CWC 2019.
3. Rohit’s five tons in the 2019 World Cup helped him to become the first player to score five tons in an ODI series/tournament. Overall, Clyde Walcott (1955 Test series vs Australia for West Indies) is the only other player to have scored as many as five centuries in a series/tournament in International cricket.
4. All six centuries of Rohit in ODI World Cups came as an opener; the most ODI CWC tons for anyone as an opener. Rohit’s seven hundreds in ICC ODI events are also the most for any opening batsman.
5. Rohit Sharma scored 648 runs in the 2019 World Cup which are the most number of runs scored by an individual during the league phase of a World Cup. Overall, Sachin Tendulkar (673 in 2003) and Matthew Hayden (659 in 2007) only have scored more runs than Rohit in an ODI World Cup.
Reaching milestones with maximums:
6. Rohit Sharma was the first player to have raised one of his centuries in all the three formats by hitting a six. Till date, Rohit has reached three ODI tons, two centuries in Test cricket and a T20I hundred by hitting a maximum.
7. Rohit brought up his first of the three ODI double centuries by hitting a six off Clint McKay (vs AUS in 2013). It is the only instance across the eight individual double hundreds in ODI history where the 200-run mark was brought up with a six.
8. Rohit became the first Indian to complete a double century in Test cricket as he hit a six to bring up his maiden double ton during the 2019 Ranchi Test against South Africa.
The exploits in Test cricket:
9. Rohit Sharma, in his first-ever Test match as an opener (vs SA in Vizag, 2019), scored a total of 303 runs with two centuries. He thus became the first player to score twin centuries in his maiden Test match as an opener. Rohit became the first to aggregate 300+ runs in maiden Test as an opener.
10. Rohit had a Test batting average of 288 at the end of his debut Test series in 2013. He scored 177 on debut at the Eden Gardens and followed it with an unbeaten 111-run knock in his 2nd Test at the Wankhede. Rohit’s average of 288 is the highest average achieved by an Indian in Test cricket at the end of a match.
A legend of ODI format:
11. Rohit Sharma scored at least one century in 10 consecutive series/tournaments in ODI format between the 2017 Champions Trophy and 2019 ODI series in Australia. No other player has more scored a century in more than 6 consecutive ODI series/tournaments.
12. Rohit had a batting average over 50 in every calendar year between 2013 and 2019 in ODI cricket. No other player in ODI history has scored 500+ runs in more than five consecutive calendar years while averaging 50 and more.
13. Rohit Sharma had 50+ ODI batting average in 2011 alongside the seven calendar years between 2013 and 2019. Thus, he scored 500+ ODI runs at 50+ batting average in the most number of calendar years (8). Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers are behind him with seven such years apiece.
The special 2019:
14. Rohit Sharma scored ten centuries in International cricket in 2019 which came against seven different opponents. Rohit thus became the first player to score centuries against 7 different teams in a calendar year.
He smashed tons against South Africa, Pakistan, England, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka during the CWC 2019. Rohit also scored a ton against Australia at the start of 2019 and also one hundred against West Indies towards the end. He also amassed three Test tons against South Africa in the home series.
15. The ten hundreds in 2019 helped Rohit Sharma to become the first player in International cricket to smash ten centuries while opening in a calendar year. Sachin Tendulkar in 1998, Graeme Smith in 2005 and David Warner in 2016 had nine centuries each.
Rohit also aggregated 2442 runs across all three International formats in 2019; the most runs in International cricket in a calendar year by an opener.
The beast of T20I format:
16. Rohit Sharma is the only player to have recorded a 50+ score in 10 different countries. Rohit has at least one 50+ score in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South Africa, England, Australia, New Zealand, West Indies, Ireland and the USA. No other player has registered 50+ scores in more than 8 different countries in Men’s T20Is. However, in Women’s T20Is, Stafanie Taylor scored fifties in 9 different cricket nations.
17. Rohit has 25 fifty-plus scores in T20Is which are the most for any player in this format. Rohit recorded 50-run mark in less than 25 balls on five different occasions. No other player has raised as many as five T20I fifties in fewer than 25 deliveries.
18. Rohit’s unbeaten 100 against England in the 2018 Bristol T20I is the only instance of a player scoring a hundred during a T20I series decider.
One of the best openers across formats:
19. Rohit, till date, stands as the only Indian opener to have scored centuries in all three formats of International Cricket. He scored 27 of his 29 ODI hundreds, three of six Test tons and all four T20I centuries as an opener.
20. During Sri Lanka’s tour of India, Rohit struck a century each in the Test, ODI and T20I series against the visitors. It is the only instance of a player scoring hundreds in all three International formats during a single tour.
The Captain:
21. Rohit Sharma’s unbeaten 208 against Sri Lanka in 2017 Mohali ODI is one of the two double centuries scored by captains in Men’s ODIs. Virender Sehwag scored 219 in the 2011 Indore ODI against West Indies. Rohit was non-striker when Sehwag got to his 200-run mark.
22. Rohit Sharma is the only player with multiple centuries as captain in Men’s T20Is. He scored 118 against Sri Lanka in 2017 Indore T20I and 111* against West Indies in the 2018 Lucknow T20I.
23. Rohit has hit 10+ sixes twice as the Indian captain in an innings/match which has not been achieved by anyone else. He smashed 12 sixes in the 2017 Mohali ODI and 10 during the 2017 Indore T20I; both against Sri Lanka.
The six-hitting machine:
24. Rohit hit 13 sixes during the 2019 Vizag Test match against South Africa which are the most number of sixes hit by any player in a Test.
25. The 13 sixes during the Vizag Test helped Rohit become the first player in International Cricket to hit 10+ sixes in a match at least once in all three formats. He struck 16 and 12 sixes in an ODI respectively during his knocks of 209 and 208*. Rohit also smashed 10 sixes during his 35-ball T20I hundred against Sri Lanka in Indore.
26. Rohit hit a total of 19 sixes during last year’s Test series against South Africa. Those are the most number of sixes hit by any player in any Test series.
27. Rohit reached 50 sixes in Test cricket in only 51 innings which makes him the 2nd quickest to 50 Test sixes. Shahid Afridi smashed 50 sixes in the longer format in only 46 innings.
28. Rohit’s 78 sixes in International cricket in 2019 are the most International sixes by any player in a calendar year. Rohit broke his own record of 74 sixes which he struck in 2018. Even in 2018, Sharma broke his own world record which was created in 2017 with the 65 sixes.
29. Rohit holds the record for scoring most number of sixes in a match for India in all the three formats. He hit 13 sixes against South Africa in 2017 Vizag test, 16 sixes against Australia in 2013 Bangalore ODI and 10 sixes against Sri Lanka in 2017 Indore T20I.
In IPL and Indian domestic circuit:
30. Rohit Sharma was the first Indian cricketer to have scored a century in the Twenty20 format. He scored an unbeaten 101 off 45 balls for Mumbai against Gujarat during the 2006-07 Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament.
31. Rohit Sharma achieved bowling figures of 4/6 in the two overs during the 2009 IPL match against Mumbai Indians where he took a hat-trick. Those bowling figures till date are the best for any player against the Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
32. Rohit Sharma is one of the six players to have scored twin centuries in a Ranji Trophy final. He achieved this feat during the 2008-09 Ranji Trophy season against Uttar Pradesh. Rohit is also the only player with twin tons in a Ranji final since the start of 1995-96 edition of the tournament.
33. Rohit Sharma finished three successful IPL chases on the last ball by hitting a six which no other player has done more than once. (For DC vs KKR in 2009, For MI vs PWI in 2011 and For MI vs DC in 2012)
