Rohit Sharma should be assigned T20I captaincy to reduce Virat Kohli’s workload: Atul Wassan
After taking over the reins from MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli has performed exceedingly well across all formats. The current Indian skipper has certainly been able to live up to his words as India’s overseas record has improved massively under Virat Kohli’s leadership.
Along with paving his way into the elite list of batsmen, Kohli has left no stones unturned in flaunting his captaincy skills. The 31-year-old has extensively led the Indian side across all formats and many people feel the need for a split captaincy to reduce Kohli’s workload.
Former Indian cricket team pacer Atul Wassan feels Rohit Sharma should take over the Indian team captaincy from Kohli. According to Wassan, Rohit should be assigned the captaincy, at least in T20Is, to destress Kohli’s mind.
Wassan also opined that Kohli leads from the front and his captaincy record is exemplary. He further said that Kohli is the best in Tests as well as ODIs and hence, the right-hander should lead the side until the next World Cup. However, to reduce a bit of workload off Kohli’s mind, Rohit can be tried in the T20I format.
“I think so (need for split captaincy). Virat wants to captain in all there formats but Rohit has shown he’s an instinctive leader. His record has been good, he leads from the front. In Test cricket, Virat Kohli is boss, in ODIs, he should captain until the next World Cup. For T20s they can probably take the stress out of Virat’s mind and let Rohit Sharma lead,” Wassan said in a live session with Sportskeeda.
Atul Wassan also opened up on Rishabh Pant’s future
Wassan also expressed his concern over the handling of Rishabh Pant. Pant, according to Wassan, is the future but has been handled poorly due to his comparisons with MS Dhoni.
“Handling of Rishabh Pant has been sad. He’s the future. He’s in the complex of MS Dhoni and he is being watched closely. You will spoil his game if you focus too much on him. Once you have identified talent, let them be.
Wassan also said that Pant will attain maturity after he gains a bit of experience. The young wicketkeeper will eventually turn into a match-winner for India, according to Wassan, who donned the Indian jersey in 4 Tests and 9 ODIs.
People might say he has been irresponsible with shot selection, but that’s the nature of the beast. He will mature, the more matches he plays, he will eventually turn a match-winner. If you play him in 3 matches and drop him for the next five games, his confidence will drop,” Wassan added.
