India is one of the fortunate cricketing nations to witness some of the batting greats over the years. Right from their early cricketing days, the country has produced the players who have ended their career as absolute legends of the game. Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli are the three batsmen of different eras who have ruled/are ruling the cricketing world.

When asked to pick the best batsman among the aforementioned trio, former India cricketer Chetan Sharma went with Gavaskar stating that he faced the fearsome bowlers of the West Indies. The Caribbean team was the best during the 1980s when their bowlers Joel Garner, Andy Roberts, Colin Croft and Michael Holding used to instill fear in the opposition batsmen with their pace.

Moreover, he also pointed out that Gavaskar used to face such bowlers without the helmet and dominate them as well. “I think it’s definitely Sunil Gavaskar and it’s not because I have played most of my cricket with him. I have played with Sachin as well, from 1989 to 1994. I obviously haven’t played with Virat but I have seen him play on television, more than he must have seen himself play.

“But Sunil Gavaskar, playing without a helmet to Joel Garner, Andy Roberts and Michael Holding was a huge thing because facing those bowlers was always terrorising… Nothing can beat Sunil Gavaskar’s herculean efforts against those bowlers,” Chetan Sharma said during a live session on Facebook with Sportskeeda.

Chetan Sharma picks the better captain between Kohli and Rohit Sharma

The 54-year-old also opined himself on the better captain between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The captaincy debate has been going on for quite some time now in the country and more so, after the latter won the IPL for the record fourth time last year. However, Chetan Sharma feels Kohli is the better option at the moment given his overall record and aggression.

“Every captain is different. I’ve played under six captains- Kapil paaji, Sunny Bhai, Ravi Shastri, Dilip Vengsarkar, Kris Srikkanth and Mohammad Azharuddin. if I had to choose one between the six, I wouldn’t be able to do it… Rohit is a different sort of a captain while Virat has a different perspective towards captaincy, he is a bit aggressive.

“As a fast bowler, I like aggressive captains. Rohit has been successful in IPL with four trophies while Virat comes as a complete package,” he further said.
