Cricketers and their gossips are always a treat to listen for every ardent follower of the sport. And, it is quite a normal thing for a fan to believe in those stories that directly come out from the mouth of players. However, there have been many players who cooked up stories to attract the spotlight or for getting an advantage. But in the end, the statements given by them were found invalid or false.

In the meantime, those players ended up paying a hefty price for the same. Some had to face the wrath of fans while some had to serve a punishment. So, here we are to tell about the five occasions when cricketers cooked up stories. Surprisingly, many big international players are also part of this list.

Here are five such instances:

Dale Steyn, the veteran pacer from South Africa recently hogged the spotlight for giving a statement against umpire Ian Gould. The fast-bowler said that he got Sachin Tendulkar lbw out when he was playing in 190s during the historic ODI match. But, the umpire didn’t raise his finger.

As per Steyn, Gould needed to go back to his hotel after the game. This statement from the 36-year-old left everyone in shock and media began analyzing that particular instance if there was anything true or not.

However, the claims that were made by the Proteas bowler were untrue. In reply to that instance, it was clearly visible that Tendulkar was not out. In that match, the former Indian opener became the first player to smack a double in an ODI match. Later on, South Africa lost that match by a margin of 153 runs in Gwalior.

2. Farokh Engineer

Farokh Engineer, the former Indian stumper has emerged as one of the players who has lost the trust of fans for giving wrong information on numerous occasions. Also, he has remained in the headlines for the same. It all happened when Rishabh Pant, the young wicketkeeper, made his international debut back in 2018.

In that game, Pant got off the mark in Test cricket with a brilliant six on the second ball off Adil Rashid. He played a small but a vital knock of 24 runs before getting out. Later on, Farokh Engineer came out praising the youngster in an interview. He said that Pant didn’t show any nerves and hit the second ball for a six.

The former player added the fact that he also had a similar type of Test debut as he had smacked three consecutive boundaries on his first three deliveries but that was not the case. In reality, he scored two runs off his first three deliveries. After giving such a statement, he was heavily trolled by the fans on social media.

3. Michael Clarke

The ardent followers of cricket will be shocked to see the name of Michael Clarke in this list. He is rated as one of the finest skippers in the cricketing history of Australia. Recently, in an interview, the 39-year-old took a dig against Aussie players and said that the team went through a phase when they were too scared to sledge Virat Kohli in a fear that they might lose hefty IPL contracts.

This statement from the former player certainly sent a shock wave in the cricketing fraternity and Cricket Australia. Later on, Paine came out with a fitting reply and said that all the players gave their best against Team India. And, there was no one in the team, who was going easy on Kohli during the Test series back in 2018-19.

Paine also added that they didn’t want to give any air to fight. In the end, Paine recited that he was pretty sure no one in the side ever thinks about an IPL contract when playing in international cricket.

In 2019, Farokh Engineer name also hit the headlines after he claimed that Indian selectors were serving tea to Anushka Sharma– the wife of the current Indian skipper– during the 2019 World Cup hosted in England. He also raised questions on the credibility of MSK Prasad-led selection panel, who picked the squad for the mega-event.

The statement given by the former Indian wicketkeeper didn’t go down well with the Bollywood actress. Later on, she came out with a long letter in which she explained that she came to watch only one match of the mega-event. Also, she sat in the family box instead of selectors’ area.

Afterwards, Farokh Engineer recited that he made such comments in jest and he had no intention of hurting Anushka Sharma. This was one of the most highlighted stories cooked by a former international cricketer.
